How should merchants prepare for AI shopping agents this holiday season?
Disclosure: Cart Signal is published by Uassist.ME, which sells customer-support and order-ops staffing, so it has a commercial interest in this topic. No company named below paid for coverage. Product capabilities are as described by the companies that announced them.
Short answer: Treat AI agents as a new sales channel that needs accurate product data, a clear checkout path and support staff who can handle agent-placed orders. Adobe forecasts AI traffic to US retail sites will rise 130% year over year this holiday season (forecast, Retail Dive, Oct 1, 2026). In October, Shopify launched Shop MCP (Shopify, Oct 13, 2026), Google launched Universal Cart in the US (Google, Oct 15, 2026), and Walmart announced agent profiles, an agent gateway beta and terms for AI agents (Walmart, Oct 21, 2026). The practical work is in catalog data, order operations and customer service.
How much shopping traffic will come from AI this holiday?
More than last year. Adobe forecasts that AI traffic to US retail sites this holiday season will rise 130% year over year (forecast). Adobe also found that visitors referred by AI added items to their carts at a 32% higher rate than other visitors (Retail Dive, Oct 1, 2026).
Adobe also reports that 77% of shoppers who used AI for online shopping felt "more confident in their purchase," and 69% said they were less likely to return what they bought (Retail Dive, Sept 28, 2026).
Bill Staikos, founder of Be Customer Led, told CX Dive, Retail Dive's sister publication, that brands need "to start designing for a world in which there are effectively two customers: the human and the human's agent" (Retail Dive, Oct 1, 2026).
What did Shopify, Google and Walmart launch or announce in October?
Two launches and one announcement in eight days, as described by each company:
| Launch | What it does | What it means for the merchant |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify Shop MCP (Oct 13) | Lets an AI agent search more than 1 billion products in Shopify Catalog, build carts and complete Shop Pay checkout after the shopper confirms the total and payment method | Orders "appear in the merchant's Shopify admin like any other order." No webhooks at launch, so agent developers poll for checkout status (Shopify, Oct 13, 2026) |
| Google Universal Cart (Oct 15, US) | A cart in Search and the Gemini app that saves items across retailers, sends price-drop and back-in-stock alerts, and checks out with Google Pay or hands the cart to the merchant's site | The merchant stays the seller of record and sends confirmations and customer support. Built on Google's Shopping Graph of 60 billion+ listings (Google, Oct 15, 2026) |
| Walmart Agent Profiles and Agent Gateway (announced Oct 21) | Agent Profiles, which Walmart says will launch in the next month, will let customers approve every agent purchase or set a spending limit (Walmart's examples: $50, $100 or $200). The gateway will give agents an MCP connection, starting with a beta for companies and developers | Walmart's terms say agents never get card details, customers approve purchases by default, Walmart's normal returns process applies "including if an agent doesn't act as intended," and agents that break the terms are blocked (Walmart, Oct 21, 2026) |
Shopify also updated its agent checkout tools on Oct 16 so buyers can make the same privacy and marketing choices in an agent (such as opting in to email or SMS) that they would make in a shop's own checkout. The shop receives those choices with the order. If an agent sends no choices, Shopify applies the shop's default settings for the buyer's country (Shopify, Oct 16, 2026). If your marketing flows depend on opt-ins collected at checkout, check with whoever owns your consent setup how agent orders show up.
Are some websites blocking AI agents?
Yes. The Verge reports that Amazon said Meta's Muse agent's "continued access" violates its site policies, and that Delta, JPMorgan Chase and Charles Schwab are blocking agents. Meta has instead partnered with retailers including Walmart, Gap, Sephora and Best Buy. Even sites that don't ban agents can block them by accident, because agents trip the same anti-bot systems built to stop scrapers and fraud (The Verge, Oct 17, 2026).
For a merchant, that means whether agents can buy from you is partly a decision and partly a side effect of your bot settings. It is worth knowing which applies to your store.
What should ecommerce teams do before Black Friday?
This is our editorial checklist, based on the launches above:
- Decide your agent policy on purpose. Check whether your platform, bot protection or CDN settings let agents reach your product pages and checkout, and whether that matches what you want.
- Clean the product data agents read. These tools read catalog data: Shop MCP searches Shopify Catalog, and Universal Cart is built on Google's Shopping Graph. Keep titles, variants, sizes, stock levels and prices accurate and consistent. Price-drop and back-in-stock alerts in tools like Universal Cart depend on that data being current.
- Make agent orders visible. On Shopify, agent orders land in admin like any other order. Find out whether you can tell them apart (by channel or app), so you can track their return and contact rates.
- Brief your support team. Customers will contact you about orders an agent placed, including orders they didn't expect. Google says merchants still own confirmations and support for Universal Cart orders. Write macros for "my AI ordered this" and make sure your returns policy is easy to find.
- Watch WISMO. Agent-placed orders still generate "where is my order?" questions, and WISMO tickets already dominate December. See How much will support tickets rise this holiday peak?.

FAQ
What is agentic commerce?
It means AI agents searching for products, building carts and sometimes completing checkout on a shopper's behalf. Shopify's Shop MCP, Google's Universal Cart and Walmart's Agent Gateway are three examples launched or announced in October 2026; Walmart's gateway starts as a beta.
Do orders placed by AI agents show up in Shopify?
Yes. Shopify says orders placed through Shop MCP appear in the merchant's Shopify admin like any other order.
Who handles customer support for orders placed through Google's Universal Cart?
The merchant. Google says shoppers receive confirmations and customer support from the merchant, which remains the seller of record.
Can AI agents spend a customer's money without approval at Walmart?
Under Walmart's announced terms, customers must approve agent purchases by default, or they can set a spending limit for an agent profile. Agents don't receive payment-card details.
How much AI shopping traffic should retailers expect?
Adobe forecasts AI traffic to US retail sites will rise 130% year over year this holiday season.
